  1. I’m a little confused with this special meeting and have a few questions maybe someone can help answer.
I thought the council said they would not spend any city money on paying for the festival, now they are having an emergency meeting to hire a contractor.
??? They have been trying to make a budget for the last 8 months, but are now going to spend well over $10,000 for an electrical contractor for the fetival? And who is this contractor? I went to the city hall to find out. From what I was told, he is not a registered , licensed contractor in the City Of Hamtramck. What about the permit fees? Does he have the 5 million dollar insurance policy that is required? I know for a fact because I was a contractor 15 years ago that used to set up the tents and booths. All contractors were required to have an extra policy for 5 million.
I’m all for this fetival, so far I thought everything was coming together great. But this stopped me like running into a brick wall. Anyone have any answers? Concerned taxpayer, property owner.

  2. This notice didn’t come with any of the usual attachments for contracts. How much is the cost, and were there other bids?

Someone remind me again – why are there plugs on the electrical lines on Joseph Campau, and why aren’t they being used? Were they removed?

  3. A couple of people have expressed to me that they’re not going to go to the festival because they don’t feel it’s right for the city to throw a big party while we’re laying off police officers. To anyone who is thinking this, I hope you’ll reconsider because this year may determine whether or not there is a festival at all next year. If the event is really successful, the proceeds could be used for seed money to continue the festival without city involvement next year. If it is unsuccessful, the city is going to have to make even more cuts.

The volunteers have been hoping to be able to pay for everything before the festival even begins. The campground amenities are being completely paid for by sponsorships, with 100% of the proceeds going to festival. They’ve raised probably close to $20,000 in donations and fundraisers, and no one is being paid for all the hard work.

Don’t let the politicians ruin it forever. Go and have fun.

  4. There are no bids from what I was told at the DPS office. Thats what is confusing. How come they arent any other bids? How come it wasn’t advertised ? How come it was never talked about before, now 2 days before the festival it’s an emergency. I don’t know what the cost is, all I can say it’s well over $10,000. About 6 years ago I knew an electrician that worked for the company that did it. They bid it out at $24,000. But it ended up at around $32,000 will all the over runs. Where is the City getting all this monry from?

  5. If anyone is wondering what happened, the electrical contractor – lowest of 4 bids – was approved, the decision to buy bullet proof vests was postponed, and after a closed session, the council voted to file a lawsuit against the City of Detroit to have their agreement on the GM plant with our city enforced.

  6. What 4 bids?? Where were they advertised? When I inquired at the DPS office, they told me there were no bids required because this was classified as an emergency? Where was the invitation to bid posted?

  7. Bids are only advertised to keep the review newspaper going.
only way to win a bid is to have good connections with hamtramck dps director.

  8. I heard about all sorts of wrong information being disseminated by DPS these days. Try asking the clerk’s office.
