Hamtramck Post office possibly closing

I heard from a very reliable source that an announcement was made yesterday at the Hamtramck Post Office. USPS is planning to close the Hamtramck office and will shift all operations to the center on Dequindre.

  1. That actually really sucks. We go there all the time. There’s often a long line, so lots of people go there all the time.

  2. Volume obviously was not considered, and it seems like the postal service has been too busy trying to compete with private shipping companies on large packages. The building will still be there no matter what happens. The Post Office bar and grill?

This was just announced at the branch on Thursday, so there is still time to try to change their minds. The right people to send letters to are Carl Levin, Debbie Stabenow, and President Obama.

As a part of the ensuing reform, the Post Office Department officially became the United States Postal Service on July 1, 1971. At that time it became an independent establishment of the executive branch of the government of the United States rather than a part of the cabinet. It began operating more like a corporation, but with the benefit of the official mail monopoly that was established under the Private Express Statutes in 1792. Package delivery and express services do not fall under this law, making it possible for other companies to offer those services.

  3. If Carl Levin puts me on a mailing list, I will never forgive him. I have a sneaking suspicion that his little web app is also mining data.

  4. Why not shift all volume from the dequindre center to the Hamtramck one? If i were USPS i would rather have an office here than in detroit simply because there’s less crime.

Can we (the city) offer a bigger tax break to keep them? maybe employ someone to cut their lawn and wash their windows?

  5. All I know about post office operations is that when we call about lost packages, we’re usually told that they are somewhere at the Dequindre sorting center.

I guarantee that sending e-mail to Congresspeople will get you on their mailing lists. I’ve been able to learn a lot about our government that way.

  6. Higher-ups at the post office are denying that the announcement was made, but according to my letter carrier, the announcement of complete branch closure in Hamtramck was made at the Hamtramck Letter Carriers Annex on Dequindre at 6-mile, and the Postal Service is planning to spend a lot of money to install a service window at the Annex, supposedly to serve Hamtramck customers.

  7. There have been a lot of closures throughout the state of post offices. They perform mail counts, time the carriers and use other scales to measure the productivity of the employees.
How about starting a petition to keep it open? I think if we raise enough of a demand for the post office to remain open and let them know that we have people that walk there and will no longer be able to get to the post office. We need to get all of the local ebay merchants and those who like to send things to the “old country” on board. We need to let people know the history of the building and what ever else that can be dug up and use it to save our post office.

  8. The one thing that really seems to get the attention of politicians is letters from constituents. Phone calls are good too, but if you send a letter, their office will usually respond in writing.

The other thing everyone can do is use the post office! Printed letters sent via the postal service are sure to be extra effective.

  9. I just searched for information on USPS closings. I found a March 20, 2009 Press Release. This Release does not name the Hamtramck Branch.

I also read on totalbankruptcy.com that the USPS will reportedly close 80 district offices.

  10. Hi Guys,

Is there a way to verify that our post office is really on the chopping list?

I’d love to write letters to the senators. But, I think it’d be better if we can confirm the status first.

  11. Hillary spoke with the mail carrier who confirmed the report. USPS is denying the closing, which is typical.

You could wait until they close it before taking action, then you’d really know for sure. Of course then it would be too late.

  12. I received word today that contractors have measured the Hamtramck Annex at 6 mile and Dequindre for a new customer window. They absolutely are making plans to close our Post Office.

  13. Again, thanks so much for your work on reporting things that would otherwise go unnoticed.

  14. PEOPLE, PLEASE BELIEVE THIS. THE HAMTRAMCK FINANCE OFFICE WILL BE CLOSING. NO DATE HAS BEEN GIVEN YET BECAUSE THE NEW CONSTRUCTION AT THE DEQUINDRE OFFICE HAS NOT BEEN SET YET. THE CONTRACTORS WERE IN THE OFFICE MEASURING WHERE THE NEW WINDOW WILL GO. THE ARTICLE IN THE HAMTRAMCK REVIEW WAS FULL OF LIES. THE POST OFFICE WOULD RATHER LIE THAN TELL YOU THE TRUTH. I WORK THERE. I HEAR IT FROM MY UNION, I SEE THE CONTRACTORS. THIS IS NO JOKE. WHEN WORD OF THE DEQUINDRE OFFICE OPENING YEARS AGO, THE HAMTRAMCK COMMUNITY CAME TOGETHER TO KEEP THAT OFFICE ON CANIFF OPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THOSE PEOPLE? YOU HAVE TO FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU WANT, NOT JUST COMPLAIN. I’M LETTING YOU KNOW THIS BECAUSE I LOVE THIS CITY AND THE CUSTOMERS ON MY ROUTE. I SEE THEM WALKING TO THE POST OFFICE DAILY. THE REASON FOR THE LONG LINES IS BECAUSE THE POST OFFICE DECIDED WE DIDN’T NEED AS MANY CLERKS SO THEY CUT THE NUMBER OF CLERK FOR BOTH OFFICES. FIGHT PEOPLE FIGHT!!!

  15. Will they still be picking up mail from the boxes in front of the Hamtramck post office? Perhaps, if they are looking to cut costs, we could simply reduce the staffing there and keep it open. Personally, I’d be just as happy to get a couple of self-service machines like they have at the big post office down on Fort Street and some sort of secure boxes for outgoing mail. Then maybe the entire post office could be run by only two or three people?

Or I could be talking out of my ass. :) I just really love the self-service machine the Fort Street post office has.

  16. MEL, YOU ARE TALKING OUT OF YOUR ASS. DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF CLOSED. THAT MEANS NO SELF SERVE MACHINE, NO BOXES OUT FRONT. TAKE YOUR HAPPY ASS DOWNTOWN TO USE SELF SERVE MACHINES. EVERY SELF SERVE MACHINE REPLACES A CLERK OR TWO. USE THIS POST OFFICE AND TRY TO KEEP IT OPEN. FIGHT PEOPLE FIGHT!!!

  17. I was thinking about last week’s article in the Review and wondering what crow tastes like.

  18. Nobody wants “their” post office to close – even if they rarely use the Postal Service they want it to stay open. It’s just like pork barrel spending – nobody considers it a waste of money if it’s a project that has a positive effect on them or their community. It’s only pork barrel spending if the pig is in someone else’s yard! Change is coming, Postal revenue is way down (as is UPS & FedEX) and something has to be done to reduce costs. The Postal Service is self sufficient (they do not receive government money) and if they can’t make it with what they bring in they must take steps to eliminate waste and unnecessary spending.

  19. Oh how far we’ve come that postal service is “pork barrel spending”.

Those new-fangled trucks are a boondoggle I say!

If they wanted to save money they could close all the Post Offices in rural areas and refuse to deliver mail in the sticks.

    How bout that?

  20. OK PEOPLE. I TOLD YOU BACK IN JUNE THAT THEY WERE GOING TO CLOSE THE HAMTRAMCK FINANCE STATION. NOW THAT IT’S ALL OVER THE NEWS, DO YOU BELIEVE ME NOW? SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW?

  21. It’s been nice having a nearby post office in this small town but shit happens in life some for the good some for the bad. All I have to say is there’s more catastrophe to worry about then this little problem, you’ll see what I’m talking about in the years to come.

  22. Caniff office isn’t closed yet. They just paid for a contract cleaner to come in and fill toilet paper once a week.

  23. Nice. We’re out of the woods on the office closing for now, but I hope you’ll keep us updated. I mailed a package last week, and there was only one worker at the counter with at least 10 people in line.
