NAACP rally to address police conduct

HAMTRAMCK NAACP CALLS AN OUTDOOR RALLY TO ADDRESS POLICE CONDUCT
MARCH 23, 2010, 5:30pm, Zussman Park, 3401 Evaline, Hamtramck 48212, across from City Hall
The recent arrest of Corinthian Church minister, Rev. Wayne Little, has added to the growing concerns in the community about police procedure and insensitivity towards people of color. The Hamtramck NAACP is sponsoring an outdoor rally on Tuesday, March 23rd at 5:30pm just prior to the 7pm City Council meeting where the issue of creating a Citizens Review Board to oversee issues on public safety will be discussed. The rally will feature prominent state and local activists, and local performers. It will address longstanding concerns of the community about discrimination and insensitivity.
The NAACP is offering solutions to foster better relations between the police and the community, and creating more community involvement in policing. The Hamtramck NAACP says Hamtramck needs a police force that serves, protects AND respects ALL the people of the city. “Community support of law enforcement can be strengthened when everyone in Hamtramck feels included in the process of making our city safe and attractive,” says Hamtramck NAACP President, Kamal Rahman.

  1. i think if the rev. would have spoken to the police in a calm and collective mannor what happen to him would never landed him in jail.

  2. Was it also Reverend Little’s fault that the police officers swore at his daughter? I can’t even count the number of times that I’ve been treated rudely when I was the person who called for service.

  3. I should add that the number of times that I’ve been helped by Hamtramck Police far outnumber the bad experiences. It is terrible that good police officers have to endure the inappropriate behavior of co-workers.

  4. Hillary how many times have you openly bashed the Hamtramck Police Department on this very website?

  5. What will the qualifications be for this review board? Also, any QUALIFIED applicants who reside in the city of Hamtramck are encouraged to apply for any public service position.

  6. Publishing descriptions of misdeeds isn’t bashing, it’s reporting. If some officers are behaving inappropriately, it should be stopped, and at the very least not ignored. I’ve encountered some really rude officers in Hamtramck as well, but most of them seem to be really nice people with a difficult job in front of them. If *anyone* in the city has been mistreated by an officer, it should be taken seriously, and not as an attack on the department. It certainly shouldn’t be swept under the rug.

If it’s a false accusation, then enough light needs to be shed to correct the situation. If mistakes were made, then some appropriate corrective action and apologies. If you have any integrity at all, then standing up to a little criticism should be easy.
