Very disappointed to see it demolished. :-( …Any plan for the site?
Neighbor
Yes. It will be a regional welfare office.
Great pictures, Steven! So, I guess Ol’ Woody was a Rotarian? (Not surprised.)
any good bricks?
It looks like there’s lots of good, old bricks mixed in with the debris but I did not enter the site.
There is no fencing or any other kind of barrier between the public alley and the demolition site.
Thanks Steven.
Glad that the land is not for another Aldi’s.
Neighbor
What is replacing it?
A new Department of Human Services office. (formerly known as Family Independence Agency)
Any new pictures of the site?
ya know the mention of bricks makes me wonder, if we wnd up with a recycling plant in the south end, will they set aside all the bricks that get thrown in the dumpsters so that some of us who can use them to fix walls and driveways can recycle them proper? that would be cool.
wonder if we can use the plant as a food drop off point for needy families too?
man I am getting carried away with ideas.
thoughts? reality checks?
The bricks are gone. Since DHS doesn’t distribute food, I expect that they will not accept donations.
You can take food donations to Friendship House on Conant.
There’s not much to see right now besides empty lots and a blocked public alley.
speaking of blight, is there a way to request all homes/businesses owned by the city to see if they are for sale cheap?
I’m not sure there are any homes or businesses owned by the city. The county handles tax collections and foreclosures. We also have properties being handled by Wayne County Nuisance Abatement. I think the city has the option to buy property from the county at the end of these processes, but usually doesn’t. The county has property auctions all the time. The list of properties at auction is usually available near the Treasurer’s Office at City Hall.
Ah, thanks. so any tax posessions would go to HUD in detroit first then?
I think the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office is the responsible agency.
Didn’t click through myself, but looks like the treasurer has a forfeiture list on his website:
http://www.waynecounty.com/treasurer/
Edit: Clicked through and feel I should mention that the list includes properties that were redeemed before the auction date. I’ve heard of cases where owners have had the option to redeem property after auctions.
I used to work @ Woody Pontiac as a mechanic from 1989 to 1991. I have many fond memories of the place and people. We used to go across the street to the Attic bar on Fat Tuesday when WRIF radio was there with Dick the Bruiser. They would close off the the road during Polish Festival making it difficult to get cars in and out for service. There was a little bar on Carpenter around the corner that I would frequent called ‘The Waiting Room Lounge’.
The Waiting Room Rocked….I miss that place :)
