Zajdel re-hired by Housing Commission despite rocky past

A telephone call to Donna Evans of the Housing Commission confirmed that former Housing Director Fred Zajdel was re-hired by the commission yesterday.
Zajdel was removed by HUD in 2004 for “a $300,000 budget shortfall, improper payments to Zajdel, and an unacceptable response to HUD’s inquiries about 21 unresolved open audit findings.”
Evans said she didn’t know Zajdel’s new title but confirmed that he is currently an employee of the Housing Commission.

  1. More than one person has e-mailed that Zajdel has been hired as grounds & maintenance manager.

  2. Mr.Zajdel was hired as the maintenance manager for the Colonel Hamtramck Homes. The former maintenance manager,Mr. Cris Cornwell, was promoted to property manager at the Senior Plaza after doing an outstanding job at the Colonel Hamtramck Homes. The Hamtramck Housing Commission previously had no management at the Senior Plaza and for years only Local 666 union workers worked at that location.Under H.U.D.s new” Asset management” plan both location’s must be run separately starting in 2007. This new H.U.D. mandate caused the need for another management position to be created.

  3. Creating another management position didn’t require the re-hiring of Mr. Zajdel. The question is, why would the commission hire someone who mismanaged money in the past when they had 9 other candidates to choose from?

As The Citizen reported, many think the re-hiring has something to do with Zajdel’s campaign work for Mayor Majewski. The grapevine says Zajdel was initially appointed to Deputy Director of the DPW by Mayor Zych after working on his campaign. Zajdel campaigned for Shahab Ahmed as well, and allegedly ordered campaign signs from his office at the DPW while they both worked for the city. They say Solidarity needs Zajdel back on the payroll now for Ahmed’s next campaign.

  4. Cronyism….Cronyism…..Cronyism!!!! It’s a sad day for Hamtramck when we have to resort to hiring someone removed by the federal govt. as opposed to finding someone in town equally qualified. Rumor has it that most of the execs. within the commission were also given new contracts…….very interesting, since I understand some of them got new contracts last January! And those contracts supposedly were for two years…..do the math! The only question I have is why would this commission and the Director place themselves on the line (reputation wise) just to accomodate Fred? They had to know they’d be under fire!!!!! What’s in it for them? I was informed of all this by some senior residents, and that Mr. Shulgon benefited from Mr. Zydel’s work on the last election…..remember he also ran for council on that slate!!!!

  5. No Cathy, it’s corruption. Spending tax dollars to repay the mayor and her slate to compensate for campaign work. It’s corruption. There were 9 other candidates and yet some how, some way, Mr. Zajdel gets the job. Kind of funny when you think they fired other employees just before “this” appointment was made. Just another political appointee taking tax dollars. Majewski can deny it all she wants, but where there’s smoke there tends to be fire. I have to say this is the worst council to hit the city yet.

  6. Hey I just thought of something, maybe the whistleblower cop who got screwed over by the chief of police while this mayor watches, could work for the mayor’s next campaign and get his job back? Why not, Zajdel gets his back and he was a failure while the cop was outstanding! Oh, but I’m sure he has too much integrity to do that. Much more than I can say about the mayor and HER council. “Taxpayer dollars for political payoffs” is what both she and her slate’s campaign theme should be next time.

  7. tom said.”I have to say this is the worst council to hit the city yet.
can say about the mayor and HER council”

to be fair tom this council didn’t hire fred or interview fred or really have anything to do with this. As far as this being the worst council yet. this is the same council we had last time. Scott, Rob, Shahab, and karen. there four votes that’s enough political capitol to keep Bob, Tim and the doc. pretty much sidelined, they can’t really do anything unless one of the slate memmbers decides to vote with them wich lets face it doesn’t happen often. i hope everyone remembers this when shahabs seat comes up this election. the slate needs less power not more.

  8. Good point Tom!!!! I guess city policy HAS indeed changed. We now re-hire Fred but we continue to hang Whittie out to dry. I just can’t fathom WHY kevin and the commissioners would approve this deal. I guess it may make sense for the mayor (if that’s the case), but WHY, out of 10 candidates did fred even make it to the final 3? WHY would kevin even consider fred????? I thought it was illegal to have meetings with commissioners and or councilpeople/mayor and make personnell decisions behind closed doors…..obviously there was some pressures or at the very least suggestions to consider fred. But then again, I guess we’ll never know. All I can say is the way it all came to light in federal court, it will surface eventually. If fred got caught so will kondrat, shulgon and anyone else involved in this corrupt fiasco. Again, the people in charge put their self-absorbed interests ahead of those of the people who elected them. Tell me how this decision, or better still, hiring fred back is the best for the people of the city, and the residents of housing??????? Maybe next time kevin will have to explain where the $300,000 went……curious to hear HIS explanations.

  9. One more thing! According to the citizen paper Karen vehemently “denies” having anything to do with fred’s return……IF that’s the case, then maybe she ought to question her appointments. IF they made a decision that was not in the best interest of the residents of the city and housing, then maybe she appointed the wrong people…..either way the ultimate responsibility lies on her and her appointments, including mr. kondrat!

  10. FRED ZAJDEL, A KNOWN FELON WITH A GOVERMENT JOB….HMMMMMM…..WHATS WRONG WITH THIS!!!!!!!

  11. I see the Citizen printed that the commission voted to give him for sick and vacation pay disputed by HUD in the letter post above. At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if HUD ended public housing in Hamtramck soon.
